The Castlegar Aquanauts Swim Club is a member of the British Columbia Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA). Our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle, develop lifelong swim skills and promote the sport of swimming in our region.
The club offers children and youth the opportunities to stay physically fit, develop their swim skills, compete in local, regional and provincial swim meets, make new friends, and have fun.
The Castlegar Aquanauts are pleased to introduce their Summer Swim Coaches for the 2016 season – Head Coach Douglas Van Ek and Assistant Head Coach Molly Heaney-Corns. Please see photos & bios below. We look forward to an amazing swim season starting May 2nd, 2016!
Hi all, my name is Doug Van Ek. I am a 20-year-old student at the University of Victoria studying Environmental Studies and Political Science. I have experience both swimming and coaching in the Kootenay region and look forward to spending the summer coaching for the Castlegar Aquanauts.
If I am not at the pool or school I am most likely exploring a beach, mountain or somewhere in between. I enjoy running, hiking and obviously swimming, as it has been my passion for most of my life. I started off in summer clubs then moved to a winter club program in Victoria BC. I began volunteer coaching in Grand Forks with the Piranhas and furthered my experience with Island Swimming and the Juan de Fuca Royals in Victoria as well as the Grand Forks Piranhas.
I am excited to be joining the Castlegar Aquanaut organization for the upcoming season. I hope to instill a fun and competitive environment for all swimmers and parents who join in the competitions and training. I look forward to meeting all the new faces and seeing all the ones I remember from the competing and coaching in the Kootenays!
Hi Everyone, my name is Molly Heaney-Corns! I am an 18 year old psychology major at the University of Victoria, and I aspire to one day be a sports psychologist or a human rights lawyer. I love to cook, hike, read and of course, swim and coach!
I have been in competitive swimming since I was 8 years old, doing 8 years in winter swimming in both Saskatchewan and British Columbia and have been training the past two years with the Sidney Piranhas Summer swim team. During my time as a winter swimmer, I competed both nationally and provincially, ranking 7th in the 5km open water at Age Group Nationals when I was 15. I started coaching as a volunteer when I was 14, and have since coached swimmers ages 6-13 with both Island Swimming and Sidney Piranhas. So as you can see, I’ve spent a lot of time at pools!
I am so excited about coming to Castlegar this summer! Swimming has been a huge influence in my life and has brought so me so many positive memories. I look forward to sharing my passion for swimming with you and your families and am so excited for what will be a fun summer!
